Case Study: Mid-Tier Audit & Advisory Firm
ESG service transformation at a Top 10 audit firm
A leading UK and Irish audit firm sought to strengthen its ESG service offerings in response to growing regulatory requirements and client demand. With evolving reporting standards such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and assurance standards, the firm required a structured approach to ESG methodologies.
We started by developing a comprehensive ESG audit methodology initially prioritising climate-related risks at the firm’s largest clients, before expanding these considerations to the broader spectrum of sustainability matters. We provided training and triaged the firm’s audit portfolio to identify both cross-selling opportunities and concentrations of ESG-related audit risk. To enhance audit quality, we designed a structured decision matrix for all audit engagements.
Leding the transformation, we provided training to all audit staff and designed a new ESG assurance methodology, complete with work programmes and risk assessment templates, aligned to ISAE (UK) 3000. We later liaised with the firm’s international network to align the global ESG assurance approach with the new sustainability-specific assurance standard, ISSA 5000.
In parallel, we developed the firm’s market strategy to target and serve larger businesses in scope of CSRD and increased ESG reporting expectations, establishing the firm as a credible provider of ESG advisory and assurance services. Through our professional support and technical expertise, the firm landed profitable engagements with a European airline, an Irish mining group, a global PE-backed healthcare group and the UK arm of a German manufacturing conglomerate.
These activities reinforced the firm’s reputation, strengthened existing client relationships while engaging with new clients, and expanded its ESG service offering, positioning it as a challenger in the evolving ESG assurance and advisory market.
